Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper was to present the metaphorical schemas of physical pain in the contemporary Polish language. The theory of conceptual metaphor (as formulated by G. Lakoff and M. Johnson serves) as methodological basis of the study. The analyzed metaphors have been grouped according to the source domain type. Metaphorical schemas referring to the images of SUBSTANCE / OBJECT, NATURAL FORCE (such as WATER, FIRE, LIGHT), and CREATURE (ANIMAL) present diverse characteristics of physical pain. Metaphors with source domains referring to HUMAN BEING (OPPONENT, RULER, INTRUDER, ALLY), LIMITATION and IMBALANCE present various types of pain—experiencer relation (as well as the overall character of the pain experience). The analyzed data have been excepted from National Corpus of Polish.
