The attitude of the Great Powers towards the Albanian question at the Ambassadors’ Conference in London 1912–1913

Summary/Abstract: This article presents the position of the Great Powers towards the Albanian question on the Balkans during the Ambassadors’ Conference in London. The author’s emphasis is on the issues of the status, boundaries and political structure of the new state defined in the British capital by the leading European countries. He analyzes the plans, ambitions and proposals of these countries with respect to the establishment of Albania. The main conclusion of the author is that the principal supporters of an independent Albania were Austria-Hungary and Italy, while the biggest opponent of its independence was Russia. The first two countries also insisted on a broader territories of the formation designed by them. Despite the neglect of ethnic realities London Conference gave rise to an independent Albanian state. Albania, in its structure and territories is the result of contradictions and rivalries between the Great Nations.
