Summary/Abstract: If we accept the premise that the aim of the science of history is to propel the national collective consciousness and provide opportunities for individuals and societies to learn from their past, then, seemingly, we will be able to arrive at the conclusion that various historical anniversaries may be doubly useful. On the one side – socially, because the remarks or criticisms made by historians with regard to historical past achieve a wider resonance in the society in the context of commemoration of “significant dates”, and thus the social function of history acquires more space for expression. On the other side – historiographically, because the discourse of a particular historical celebration provides a fair chance to test the durability of the already existing historiographic concepts and myths or to unearth from the labyrinths of collective memory to the public not only the noble feats and wise actions but also the much darker pages of history.
