Present Dimensions of the Custom of Singing Christmas Carols. Observations from Some Sofia Villages

Summary/Abstract: The text presents the present state of the custom of singing Christmas carols in Sofia region. Examined are questions concerning performers, meanings, contexts, methods of practice and ritual repertoire through observation and interviews. Drawn are the innovative moments in the structure of the custom compared with its traditional parameters. The research shows that today the Custom of Singing Christmas Carols in Sofia region functions as: 1) dying away but still existing regular custom practice, performed on and around Christmas eve; 2) a stage produced art product; 3) element of entertainment, placed in an untraditional context.
