Summary/Abstract: The article deals with problems of rational discourse in science and everyday life, because reasoning evidently - or at least the giving of reasons - is pervasive in our society. We use language to persuade or convince one another, to exchange information, etc, but we do distinguish between instrumental and argumentative uses of language. By saying "the argumentative use of language", we mean those utterances that succeed or fail only due to a so-called "rational foundation" - the presence or absence of support by arguments, reasons, evidence. The modern theory of argumentation, developed in part by Stephen Toulmin, along with Chaim Perelman and Louise Olbrechts-Tyteca, accomplished an epistemological shift from formal, technical logic toward informal applied logic. It has revealed the possibility to see far beyond the limits of formal logic and understand better the complex and complimentary nature of human rationality.
