Summary/Abstract: This article examines China Miéville’s novel, The City and the City (2009), focusing on one particular aspect of the book – the extraordinary structure of the title city. It is not merely the background of the events, but a fully-fledged character of the novel. The aim of the article is to apply the psychoanalytical categories of repression and negation to the analysis of the city and its social construction. The purpose of this is to demonstrate how Miéville uses urbanism as socio-psychological metaphor. Within that paradigm, the city turns out to be not only a physical space that shapes the unconscious of its inhabitants, but also a social fantasy that reflects the traumatic nature of the city itself.
