Interpretative Sociology and the Philosophy of Praxis: Comparing Max Weber and Antonio Gramsci

Summary/Abstract: Although Weber and Gramsci approach the problem of consciousness from different angles they are united in their appreciation of its significance, and indeed, in the task of theorizing it as the unsolved question of their time. In the following pages I shall examine four aspects of their respective theories: 1) the social psychology of human consciousness; 2) the cultural motive force of its evolution, and the social processes which give these their significance; 3) the stratification of culture, and 4) the role of intellectuals as the agents of cultural change. Finally I shall explore the opposite versions of society that each derives from theories that are similar in many ways.
