Traditional Painted Carts in Bulgaria

Summary/Abstract: There is a detailed description of the construction of two-horse and one-horse painted carts, indicating the wealth of Bulgarian terminology for its numerous wooden and iron parts. The appearance of certain parallel Turkish terms was due to the fact that the local Turkish population took other their construction. The process of perfecting the wooden two-wheel and four-wheel cart by replacing wooden by iron parts is traced. In conclusion the author stresses that the painted (motley), and as some people call them singing' horse-drawn carts, hide within themselves specific Bulgarian ethnographic elements which distinguish them from similar carts in some of our neighboring countries.
