Summary/Abstract: After gaining its independence, Azerbaijan faced plenty of internal and external problems. The country was obliged to a constantly instable period since both domestic and external factors gave way to ever changing regimes in the country. Besides, the newly originated post-Soviet international order was marked with developments conflicting its interests. Although many independent republics were established upon the former Soviet land they kept remaining under Russian influence to a great extent which was also reluctantly recognized by Western countries. Azerbaijani government gave priority to its energy policies with the aim of handling the problems through the management of its energy sources within the frame of international conjuncture. In this sense, Azerbaijani first invited Western companies to the region in order to make sure that its natural-gas deposits will operate. In the second phase, it conducted researches to build the necessary infrastructure to transfer the processed energy supplies to the global market. In this respect, the primary principle was to develop alternative lines while building transportation gateways. Following this policy, Azerbaijani government made it certain to keep its position safe against dependency in the transportation process of its oil and natural gas over the neighbouring states. This article deals with the process of Azerbaijani energy policy development and the construction of alternative energy lines and the multi-variable dimensions of its energy policy.
