Summary/Abstract: The contemporary Arab culture has three basic manifestations: (I) fundamentalist and traditionalistic prevalent culture; (2) nomad. Christian and (3) urban subcultures and directed against the prevalent culture anticulture. The relationships between them are a product of complicated interferations among different aspects of social life. This tendency is marked in the three types of subcultures. An evidence for its stability are the psychosocial characteristics of the family as a nucleus of social organization. The pyramidal structure of the Arab family, where the Islamic and traditional culture give the main role to man is characterized by firm connec¬tions between family members, their interdependence and still strongly evi¬dent family solidarity ("assabiya"). The main function of marriage is the family reproduction and it is considered to be more a social problem than a family one, which is resolved in the family. Analysis of the Arab culture during the last decades of the 20th century shows that a conflict between tradition and modern times takes place. The main contradiction is between the closed (traditional) values and the open (modern) ones that exist in society and culture.
