Summary/Abstract: The article employs critical discourse analysis to explore in detail two news reports from the BBC News World Edition Online and the Scotsman, respectively, which covered the marriage of King Cioabă’s underage daughter in the year 2003. The findings reveal discursive mechanisms that sensationalise the topic and emphasise a discourse of obligations towards the European Union and a discourse of power. The situation of the Romanian Roma (history, tradition, identity) is insufficiently considered and no significant alternative viewpoints are introduced.
