Summary/Abstract: An early essay by Nowak summarizing Ajdukiewicz’s chief achievements in the field of semantics. The paper consists of four parts. Part one describes Ajdukiewicz’s notion of “semiotic function”. Part two discusses pragmatics: the relations between linguistic expressions and mental acts, the notion of understanding an expression, language usage, and Ajdukiewicz’s original idea of “meaning directive”. Part three analyzes semantic concepts such as “sign”, “denoting”, and “asserting”. Part four presents the evolution of Ajdukiewicz’s theory of meaning: the early, ‘mentalist’ theory, the notion of meaning as a mode of understanding, and finally, the theory employing the concept of meaning directive.
