Summary/Abstract: In comparison with their fellow actors, Croatian actresses have encountered more obstacles on their way to affirmation in the theatre throughout Croatian theatre history. After the Croatian National Revival, actresses gradually started taking jobs other than acting, sometimes even hiding their true identities: they wrote newspaper articles and memoirs, plays and short stories, they translated, gave acting lessons and directed, and some of them have even become recognized scholars today. The paper follows the chronology of notable breakthroughs on the part of numerous actresses outside the theatre, thus opening up the possibility for interpretation of the culturologically determined status of Croatian actresses in society, encompassing Croatian theatre history from the beginning till nowadays.
