Summary/Abstract: The author focuses his attention on sports terminology used in contemporary Polish. Basing on the assumption that the most significant aspect of the evolution of sports vocabulary is its quantitative development, the author attempts to identify the reasons for this process, considering the media, in particular the television, to be the primary source of influence. Various changes in sports terminology are attested in dictionaries of 20th-century Polish, such as {Słownik języka polskiego} edited by W. Doroszewski (SJPD) and {Słownik uniwersalny języka polskiego} edited by S. Dubisz (USJP). As is to be expected, USJP lists more sport terms than SJPD; it includes names of new games and disciplines, names denoting competitors, in particular female ones, as well as vocabulary used by sportspeople. The study of items recorded in USJP confirms the well-known fact that specialist lexis is continuously enriched with foreign borrowings, which in the case of sports lexis are mostly Anglicisms.
