Summary/Abstract: The authors of the article compare various manners of defining two lexemes: {God} and {man} in the most important Polish language dictionaries from XIX–XX centuries. This period in time was important for its changes in defining, which represent at the same time changes in cultural and scientific thinking, and as a consequence – in Polish lexicography. The analysis of the definitions leads to a conclusion that even in such basic and stable notions there appear differences in defining. What varies is the semantic extent in the words, the internal organization of the definitions, and the approach towards expressions. There are different types of definition and ways of categorization; sometimes connotations are given. These variations stem from the general idea of each dictionary and from the intellectual transformations of the XIX and XX centuries.
