Summary/Abstract: The influence of a social group on self-evaluation of its member makes pos-sible such features of self-evaluation as on one hand dependence on opinions and evaluations of others and comparative character and on the other hand opinions which arę contained in stereotypes of social groups, opinions on their members and their assessments. A stereotype can influence self-evaluation of members of the group which is its object provided that they know it and identify themselves with the group. If these conditions arę fulfiUed, the stereotype can lower or step up the self-evaluation of a member of the group. The process depends on the configuration of different factors owing to which the member submits himself to the suggestion of the stereotype or responds with a defence against the stereotype. Operating the stereotypes of the other groups than oneself's most often increases the self--evaluation owing to widespread tendency to favour his own group and owing to the contentment with the competences which arę produced by using stereotypes.
