Summary/Abstract: The article examines the problem of the single fatherhood in Poland. The author presents here a historical outline and methodology of the studied phenomenon in terms of educational sciences. Following the scientific literature, the autor showes six reasons of the single fatherhood: death of a wife, divorce, separation, abandonment by the mother of illigitimate child, the mother residency in a hospital or in a social care facility, depriving the mother of parental rights. In the next part the author divides the types of single fathers with regard to its cause and nature of their functions. Based on the data the importance of the father in the upbringing of the child and its significant impact on the normal psychological development can be highlighted.
