Summary/Abstract: Named and aknowleged bishop of the Gherla diocese, Iuliu Hossu took part in and was commited to the political events of the fall of the year 1918, events in which the United Church had an important part. The actions of the young bishop of Gherla sustained the end of the submission to the Austrian –Hungarian authorities. At the Great National Reunion in Alba Iulia, on december the 1st 1918, he read in front of over 100.000 participants the Decision of Unification of Transilvania to Romania. The anger of the hungarian aristocrates made them plot the bishop’s assasination, and adress death threats to the clergy, while, in front of the bishop’s house, armed gangs were shooting the people. Afther the Great Union the bishop commited himself to complex actions emphaising on promoting the educational system and the national culture. Young people found in the educational institutions created by Hossu the proper atmosphere for instruction and study. Some of the institutions he founded were: The Theological Academy, The Seminary, high schools, boarding schools, The Normal School, secondary schools, kindergardens, etc. For all of these he purchased land, constructed and endowed buildings, hired teachers and administrative staff. The change of the bishop’s headquarters from Gherla to Cluj in 1930 reinforced these activities. The bishop founded further institutions and thoroughly organized them. He paid a special attention to he diocese’s book shop and museum, but also to numerous religious publications. As a recognition of his cultural and scientific activity he was named member of honour of the Romanian Academy.
