Summary/Abstract: On 12 June 1987, Ronald Reagan stood before West Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate and the wall that surrounded the free world’s enclave hundreds of miles inside Soviet-dominated Eastern Europe. There, in delivering the speech that defined the final phase of the Cold War, he called out a direct challenge to the leader of the Soviet Union: “Mr Gorbachev, Tear down this wall.”
