Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the concept of the international system and its place among the international relations theories and approaches. The main aim of the article it to gather and organize available knowledge about different approaches to analyzing the international system and its components (structures, actors, principles etc.). The author presents a place that the general concept of the system takes in broadly understood science and marks out the meaning of the general systems theory (GST) to the evolution of the international system concept in the international relations theory. The article shows how the concept of the international system is presented, defi ned and understood by different (mainly mainstream) international relations theories and approaches: traditional approach, behavioral approach, neorealism, neoliberalism, neomarxism, the critical theory, and social constructivism. The author also briefl y presents how the concept of the international system has been approached and defi ned by the Polish theorists of international relations. In conclusion, the author claims that the debate over the ontological and analytical dimension of the international system remains one of the most vital and important axis of the debate within all the major theoretical approaches.
