Summary/Abstract: Protection and respect for cultural diversity have arisen as an issue with the deepening processes of globalization. Economic globalization which induces homogenization strongly infl uences also other areas, including the political, ecological, social and, fi nally, the cultural sphere. There is an academic discussion on the changes in culture(s) and its (their) future in the globalized world. Parallel to the academic discussion, changes in cultures caused by globalization processes became a hot issue for the social movements that stand in opposition to globalization (called also alterglobalization movements or global justice movements). For these movements, changes in culture – especially homogenization – have been perceived as a side effect caused by badly governed globalization. Supporters of cultural diversity preservation naturally perceive themselves as objectors to corporate-led globalization. In these terms, actions promoting the protection and respect for cultural diversity might be treated as a manifest opposition toward the type of governance instituted by global organizations, such as WTO, IMF, OECD or the World Bank. The aim of this paper is to analyze how alterglobalization movements interpret the cultural diversity and how they use the concept in their actions.
