Summary/Abstract: The author of this article aims to present main factors driving substantial investment in submarine procurement made in the Asia-Pacifi c region across the last two decades. In the author’s opinion primary explanation for that phenomena is that submarines, as a weapon system, are especially well-suited to the operational conditions of the potential West-Pacifi c Theatre of Military Operations, as well as to the combat environment created by the latest Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA). The author provides an analysis of the potential West-Pacifi c Theatre of Military Operations from geographic, political-strategic and military perspective. Thus, a picture of operational environment of the regional naval forces is created. Then operational characteristics and capabilities of submarines are presented in order to demonstrate their usefulness on the analyzed Theatre of Operations. In conclusion, an analysis of roles played by the subsurface component in the naval doctrines of major regional powers is offered
