Summary/Abstract: The text of the Bacchides and of other Plautine comedies allows us to reach some conclusions about the spectators, their ability to read and write, their knowledge of geography, their familiarity with the Greek language and with writers from Homer to Ennius. Even metaphors and jokes used by Plautus throw some light on his contemporaries' worldview and tastes.
