Summary/Abstract: This essay provides the conceptual background to the following articles that we compiled in the thematic block on popular music studies and technology. The selected texts employ different methods and approach the questions of recording, manipulating and playing music, and the cultural forms, popular interpretations and economic motivations pertaining to these activities from different viewpoints. However, their writings all share the same intuition: namely that the role of the technologies to which music is tied are not neutral in relation to the production, consumption of pieces and in connection with these also not neutral concerning power relations.
