Summary/Abstract: This article outlines the institutional conditions of political recruitment and candidate selection in Slovakia. Electoral and party systems are regarded as main political institutions influencing the process of candidate selection for parliamentary election. Considering the electoral system of a single electoral district, it has a crucial negative influence on candidate selection rules and procedures because of power concentration in the hands of party elites. Under these conditions, the establishment of party structures across the country is an insignificant aim of party politics. The article points out that a weakly institutionalized party system prevents the formation of stable patterns of political recruitment in Slovakia and reduces the role of regional party structures within the parties.
