Summary/Abstract: The E.U. enlargement process has generated great differences between the EU-27 member states regarding the economic development level which make necessary the implementation of cohesion policy. This paper presents the real convergence indicators for Romania and the other EU countries and wants to emphasize some differences between EU15 and EU27 related to GDP per capita, GNP level, employment level e.g. Related to this framework, the cohesion policy is necessary in order to decrease and then eliminate this inadvertence. Possible consequences for Romanian economic development are also taken into discussion. For attending economic and social cohesion, the absorption of structural and cohesion founds in Romania is essential.
