THE MARYPORT ALTARS: AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL MYTH DISPELLED

Summary/Abstract: The excavations of summer 2011 in the area surrounding the Roman fort of Maryport (Cumbrian Coast) reached also the pits where previous excavations found several altars buried in them. New interpretation of the pits and of a ditch found nearby suggest, that the altars were not ritually buried in the pits, but were reused, maybe in the 4th C. AD, in order to reinforce the foundations as post packing for a large timber structure. Future excavations will hopefully bring more evidence for further interpreting this site.
