Summary/Abstract: The problem of structuring heterogeneous societies in a region cannot be solved without the correct historical understanding. Although important, the question of national security is not the only aspect of the problem.1 Another aspect of the conflict, however, is more significant, because it involves the main controversy of our days: This is the challenge for a creative new form of coexistence in countries with a heterogeneous population with different values, national, ethnic, linguistic, religious or racial. In Cyprus there has been coexistence not only during the English period but also during the Ottoman rule. In the pages to follow we will study in short the extent and kind of achieved coexistence although some people may argue that this coexistence existed under a rule, especially under a foreign one.
