Summary/Abstract: One of Kockelmans’ most important philosophical principles is that in a given scientific domain every theoretical object has an interpretation in terms of cognitive existentialism. In his eyes the repeated failure of his fellow analytical philosophers of science to be certain of satisfying this tenet is one their most grevious errors. Interestingly enough, the same error is shared by the radical opponents to the analytical philosophy – the champions of the cultural studies of science. Like other students of Kockelmans, I too, think that deep issues concerning the socio-cultural status of the natural sciences may have been at stake in elaborating further on the position of cognitive existentialism. My conjecture in the present paper is that a scientification of the life-world guided by the tenets of cognitive existentialism would provide the most effective alternative to that form of instrumental rationality which is spread by the technologically finalized natural sciences.
