Summary/Abstract: This text introduces the criticism of modern and postmodern theories of identity, and the comprehension of the signifi cance which term class has in contemporary sociology. By closer insight on this problem, authors wanted to point out the reductionism of postmodernistic theoretical explanations of the construction of identity in modern society. They tried to apply the philosophy of science of Thomas Kuhn on social science, in order to demystify the way postmodernistic concept of identity got its primate in sociology. By passing on posfordistic phase in the development of capitalism and spreading of consumerism as its legitimate ideology, identity, instead of social class, becomes the key analytic concept of sociological analysis. According to postmodernistic theorists, postmodern identity is fluid, fragmentated and chosen by one’s free will. By insight in debates considering class and class analysis which have been led among social scientists, authors tried to point out that socio-economic situation of individual still influences hers/his life chances and style of life in significant amount. By the opinion of the authors, this text explains that the choice of one’s style of life is under the influence of structural factors, rather than matter of absolute free choice, as the postmodernistic theorists point.
