Summary/Abstract: The way that meaning is conveyed in a language can tell us about the primary functions of that language in society. Apart from basic meanings, language units carry different amounts of information depending on the language – such as gender, tense etc. Also, the relation between the written and the spoken word can vary. In this paper we consider the connection between meaning and the functions of language in a society on the example of Classical Chinese. We argue that the coding of meaning in Classical Chinese is structured so as to relate the ambiguity of reality, and that the characteristics of the language are in accordance with the cultural framework of a society built on the bases of philosophy and led by scholars. The question of the true meaning of communication, literacy and knowing a language is put forward.
