Summary/Abstract: The problems of modernization of Slovak society in Ján Lajčiak´s Slovakia and Culture. The paper commemorates the 120th anniversary of Lajčiak´s birth. J. Lajčiak received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Semitic languages from the University of Leipzig and his Doctor of Divinity degree from the Protestant Faculty of the Sorbonne (1905). The work Slovakia and Culture was published in 1920, two years after Lajciak´s death. because the original text was lost a still incomplete edition appreaved in 1957 and another appreaved in 1994. The work represents the first accomplished sociological analysis of Slovak society during the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century. The paper concentrates on problems of modernization of Slovak society.
