Summary/Abstract: [...] Each of the “great returnees” – the former king of Bulgaria, the Serbian crown prince and the former king of Romania – intended to return to the land of their ancestors at the beginning of the regime change period. Michael made attempts as early as 1989, but the then regime of Ion Iliescu repeatedly prevented the family from entering the country. Michael was able to get through on some occasions, but was escorted back to the border each time by armed guards. The Royal House of Serbia opted for different tactics: they returned home only once the troubles and wars were over. Crown Prince Alexander, a son of the Karadordevic dynasty born in 1945 in London, now lives in Belgrade with a status that is somewhat difficult to define, receiving public money for the upkeep of his royal household. It may be a consolation to him that he is the survivor: the reign of the competing Obrenovic family ended in 1903.[...]
