Summary/Abstract: The article provides a comparative analysis of British governments’ approaches toward entering the European Economic Community (EEC)/European Community (EC) in 1961–1973. The given period covers the Governments of Harold Macmillan (1959–1964), Harold Wilson (1964–1970), and Edward Heath (1970–1974). The author assumes that the governmental approaches can be derived from three key aspects: 1) an attitude toward the EEC/EC as a whole, 2) identification of potential advantages associated with the accession, and 3) identification of potential disadvantages associated with the accession. The article further posits that these aspects were mostly based on various domestic factors, including the personality of Prime Minister, public support for the accession and the level of (both parliamentary and intra-party) opposition. After the analysis of the elements mentioned above, the article concludes by a final evaluation of Macmillan’s, Wilson’s and Heath’s Governments’ approaches toward the British accession to the EEC/EC.
