Summary/Abstract: The study contains the analysis of smells in the poetry of Anna Akhmatova. In the methodology of contemporary literary criticism there is a certain tendency towards the intensified update of symbolism connected with various smells, partly with tastes. This symbolic forms can play a synthetizing role instead of older notions (author, recipient). In Akhmatova’s poetry the researcher found out the three invariants. In her early work it is the so-called „smell without its own smell“. The interpretation and the understanding of the sense of smells depends on the ge-neral tonality of the poem. The smells are linked with the characteristic subjects of Akhmatova’s lyric poetry – love, death and breakup. The second invariant could be called traditional which is connected with the generally accepted European tradition and symbolism based, for example, on the Bible, Antiquity and Shakespeare. Finally, the third invariant is linked with the tradition od mystical symbolism. The problem of smells in Anna Akhmatova’s poetry is part of a specific discourse as a verbally articulated form of the objecification of the content of the consciousness regulated by the dominant type of rationality.
