Summary/Abstract: The information age has brought on a dizzying increase in the amount of information and the speed of their exchange in everyday life and work, creating the need for constant learning and development of individuals. The European Union places lifelong learning at the core of its approach to education, advocating the complementary relation between formal and non-formal education. In this work, we present the basic concepts related to lifelong learning and non-formal education, the differences between formal and non-formal education and their current status in the European Union and Serbia. The conclusion drawn is that non-formal education, due to its flexibility is crucial in gaining knowledge, skills and attitudes needed in everyday life as well as for advanced konkurentnost on the work market.
