Summary/Abstract: While asymmetries of economic, financial, political and cultural nature grow worldwide, the phenomenon of institutional asymmetry increases its scope and power as well. It can be a source of barriers to growth and development of enterprises. The threats which result from the institutional asymmetry, in particular can be noticed in the conditions of globalizing crisis phenomena. Since a crisis gives impetus to a spiral of asymmetry – it weakens the weak organizations, and can strengthen the strong ones. From the opposite perspective, asymmetric institutions can cause crisis situations in their environment. Based on the example of the steel processing industry in Poland, the potential of influence of the very asymmetric financial institutions on other subjects in their environment was presented. Those institutions are able to significantly restrict the opportunities of those subjects’ development, or even to threaten their further being, whereas in the macroeconomic scale – they are able to cause crises of a global scope, striking not only industries, but the whole domestic or regional economies.
