Summary/Abstract: For the last few decades the concept of conditionality became the core strategy of international organizations to induce non-member states to comply with its fundamental rules of statehood. The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation incorporated the concept of conditionality as an essential part of its post-Cold War enlargement. The article starts with an introduction to the origins and the evolution of the policy of conditionality and proceeds with an analysis of the ratio staying behind the current process of NATO enlargement toward the Balkans. The third part reviews how NATO’s policy on conditionality reflects the political and strategic motives of the enlargement and studies the specific character of NATO’s conditionality. The impact of NATO conditionality on the Bulgarian and Romanian politics is discussed in the fourth part. The concluding remarks are based on evaluation of the success of NATO’s policy of conditionality to guide the transition in the Balkans.
