Summary/Abstract: The Ottoman Empire engaged in a long-during war with the Holy League after the Vienna defeat in 1683. The war ended with the treaty of Karlowitz in 1699. The Empire signed individual treaties with every member of the League, including Russia (June, 1700). According to this treaty Russia got a right of keeping permanent ambassador in Istanbul. The Russian Tsar chose Peter Andreevich Tolstoi for this job. In this article it will be examined the Ottoman-Russian relations and Tolstoi’s role within these relations during his mission.
