Summary/Abstract: Vampires became a major subject in european culture during the year 1732. In the regions of Hungary that were inhabited by slavs or romanians, stories about vampires existed long before that date. When the sotries about vampires found their way to Western Europe, different scientific theories that tried to explain the phenomenen begun to circulate. The imperial court in Vienna sent a german physician to the affected regions to write a detailed report that was published in 1786. His explanaition based on the fact that the romanians had other habits of alimentation that caused the "vampire illness", a phenomenon that could not be observed in the case of the germans and serbs in the region because of their much more balanced diet.
