Summary/Abstract: In his novels, French author Milan Kundera frequently identifies certain symptoms of contemporary society. Among these, one is the proliferation of media images (that Kundera calls imagology), that tend to blur the borderline between the private sphere and the public one. Another is the speeding of events in modern times, that cause increasing amnesia, that leads to a decentering of the self. In Kundera’s novel La lenteur (Slowness), the contemporary obsession with images and speed causes the persons’ outward images to break away from their deep selves, thus leading to a rupture of the body from the mind, that is, to an oblivion of the self (oubli de soi).
