Summary/Abstract: The hope that the churches in the former Eastern block would fill up again after the fall of Communism was dashed. The aggressive Communist policy towards religion and towards the churches left deep marks, even if in different ways in the individual countries. In this contribution three different national types are differentiated: religious countries, those with a tendency towards atheism, and those that are polarized. Persecution experiences, subtle acts of discrimination, as well as expectations directed towards the churches on the part of the people of Eastern (Central) Europe form, among other things, the main foci of the empirical „Aufbruch-Studien” of 1997 and 2007 which are presented and analysed here in some of their aspects. In this process it is clear that much can be learned from Eastern Europe, not least of all that the church is capable to be a highly imaginative stronghold of liberty and critical intelligence.
