Summary/Abstract: In this paper, basic concepts of dialectology are defined, and this field of linguistic research is related to the basic linguistic disciplines, especially typology, sociolinguistics, and genetic linguistics. The correct usage of dialectological terms, such as diasystem, dialect group, and dialect is established, and the relationships between standard languages and dialects are illustrated with examples from the Central South Slavonic diasystem.
