Summary/Abstract: The article presents an analysis of the foundations of modernity proposed by Eric Voegelin. Modern intellectual and mass movements are interpreted as development and continuation of conceptions promoted by gnostic movements. Their aim is to restructure the imperfect world and transform the human nature. The role of intellectuals in the project of restructuring and transforming is described and underlined. In opposition to Christian eschatology, they promise to make the earth become the world of perfect happiness. This world will be inhabited by the “new man”. The article also shows common inspirations and aspirations of modern intellectual and mass movements, standing at the sources of the twentieth century totalitarianisms – communism and Nazism.
