Summary/Abstract: Following an overview of the metaphor use found in biology, social sciences and psychology, the author examines the possible modes of connection between discourse and psychology in order to move on to formulating his critique aimed at one of these modes, namely the so called “Loughborugh school” of discursive psychology. He considers the school to be one of outstanding importance within the development of psychology during the past couple of decades, the works of which open up paths towards a social scientific and at the same time critical psychology. However he also draws attention in his critique to the contradicting stance of the members of the school regarding the relationship of mental and discursive events, and also points out the rather narrow interpretation of the concept of discourse entailed in its argumentative conceptualisation held by these members.
