Summary/Abstract: Trauma cannot be fully understood without a detailed investigation of its longterm effects on human psyche. This article presents the hidden psychological consequences of war, torture and persecution in postconflict societies in the beginning of the XXI century. Without trying to cover the wide range of psychosocial phenomena arising from organized violence, I focus the present study on a single incident of torturerelated trauma in order to illustrate the destructive power of exposure to war and violence over wider society. The paper discusses a case of secondary traumatization in the family of a survivor which has become evident due to the therapeutic work of helping professionals. By employing the explanatory potential of psychology, I shall introduce the concepts of aggression, thoroughly examine the unconscious sources of violent behavior and outline the psychosocial consequences of violence at individual, family and collective level.
