Summary/Abstract: Following the mysterious interest that he acquired for the area of Buzău, Alexandru Odobescu created in 1870 an archeological questionnaire which he sent a year later to the schools across the country. The teachers were asked to answer a series of questions regarding the existence of monasteries, ancient monuments, ruins and local traditions across each commune. The answers from Buzău district were among the first ones to arrive, yet Odobescu was disappointed that his questionnaire was poorly received in this area. Nevertheless, he went through the files and organized the information he gathered. In this first part of the paper, we will analyze the circumstances in which Odobescu became interested in the Buzău district, up until the creation of his archeological questionnaire. We will follow his activity and try to understand his actions. Also, we will publish all the answers from the Buzău district and spatially explore them by constructing cartographic representations.
