Summary/Abstract: Based on the consideration that some place names form groups around a polar designation, a phenomenon that is the expression of the domination, on the level of geographical referent, of an object of maximum social-geographic importance in relation to the contiguous objects, we tried to account for the relationships between the components of such a toponymic structure created by a toponymic nucleus and for those between the place names and the geographical references. Thus we could review the changes within these structures, especially in bilingual areas, where the toponyms go beyond the limits of languages, although in a manner that should be considered with greater accuracy by the researcher. One should reconsider in the light of this research the connexion between endonyms and exonyms, as well as the relationship between the generic and the specific element of a compound toponym. An example is given of the structuring process called by Dragoş Moldovanu polarization, that is the creation of the secondary toponyms, called by the same linguist toponymic derivatives, starting from a polar name or nucleus, and accordingly of the changes that occur during the functioning of these toponymic fields.
