Summary/Abstract: "Throughout the history of versification in verses written in the most different verse forms, traditions and languages evolve similar regularities and features of development. This paper aims to describe several of the more particularly conspicuous tendencies, by focusing attention on the two fundamental foundations: metrics and rhythmics. Special emphasis will be placed on the metrical and rhythmical aspects of different verse parts, especially the beginning and ending of verse. More complicated problems, which on the one hand are related to the prosody of poetry, and, on the other for instance, the evolution of secondary rhythmics, will be left for the future treatments."
