Summary/Abstract: An adequate understanding of the relationship between our everyday activities and the philosophy of the culture we ‘inhabit’ is of importance for answering both the question about the nature of philosophy and the one about latter’s practical value. Therefore an appropriate characterization of the phenomenon ‘everyday life’ is needed as well as an explication of at least some of the mechanisms that are responsible for the transformation of everyday practices into specialized practices like scientific or philosophical inquiries. Four criteria – perception of time and space, on the one hand, and degrees of skills and reflection on the other, are being specified and applied in order to gain relevant distinctions. Neither a single criterion nor a definite set of them is enough for a suitable categorization. We conclude that everyday and specialized activities are basically underdetermined and their distinction is situationally grounded. Consequently, philosophy is not transcendent to culture.
